Drinks Seniors Should Avoid

Aug 8, 2018 by Suzanne M. White

There are many beverages that are loaded with calories and sugar. Whenever possible, senior citizens should avoid them and opt for water instead. Comfort Keepers® of Flemington, NJ encourages older adults to stay away from the following drinks:

Contrary to popular belief, juice can actually be very unhealthy. Regardless of whether it’s fresh squeezed or from a carton, it is full of calories and sugar. Encourage your senior loved ones to have a piece of fruit instead of drinking juice. By doing so they will be able to fill up on fiber and save on calories and sugar.

Coffee Drinks with Sugary

It can be tempting for seniors to stop at their favorite coffee shop and order a Cappuccino or another delicious coffee drink. While these drinks are tasty, they are packed with sugar and calories thanks to their syrups, whipped toppings, caramel drizzles, and chocolate shavings. Encourage your senior loved ones to stay away from these drinks regularly. If your senior love one is craving a dessert, let them enjoy one every once in a while.

Soda can be addicting and is full of sugar. That’s why older adults should avoid buying it and ordering it while dining out. It’s okay to have some ginger ale when their stomach is aching, but drinking soda on a regular basis can be very harmful to a senior.

Sport Drinks

Sports drinks are designed for high-performance athletes, not seniors who are looking to lead a healthy lifestyle. They are high in calories and can make an older adult nauseous if they have a sensitive stomach. It’s best for seniors to stick to water in order to stay fueled.

Juice, sugary coffee drinks, soda, and sports drinks should all be avoided as they can lead to unhealthy weight gain and serious complications down the road. If you have any questions, seek the advice of your health care professional.
