May 3, 2018 by Nancy Hmieleski, RN, BSN Director of Nursing

Gardening is a wonderful way to encourage your parent to get out of the house and enjoy more physical and cognitive activity during the spring season. In order for your parent to get the most of the benefits, it is important to ensure that they stay safe as they are participating in this activity. As their family caregiver you can help them to make the most of their activity while also keeping them safe and healthy all spring.

Use these tips to help your parent stay safe while gardening this spring:

  • Be sure that they wear the proper sun protection when they are out of the home. Even if they are going to be out for only a short time, it is important to protect their skin with sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, a wide hat to protect their face, and sunglasses to protect their eyes
  • Encourage your parent to wear adequate bug repellant. Look for products that specifically list that it protects against ticks which can be very dangerous for your parent
  • Make sure that your aging parent stays well hydrated throughout the experience. Even if it is not very warm outside, they will still need more hydration when gardening than if they were sedentary at home
  • Make sure that your parent takes breaks so that they do not overdo things and exhaust themselves. This is particularly important if they are not accustomed to much activity or are suffering health issues
  • Ensure that someone knows when your parent is going out of the home. This allows you to keep track of them and make sure that they got back in safely. Having an elder care provider with them can make this easier and allow your parent to enjoy this activity more
