Home Care Tips: Emergency Preparation Tactics for Seniors

Apr 3, 2018 by Marc Jeffries

A disaster can occur and change a life in an instant. Natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, floods and earthquakes can strike at any time and affect individuals of all ages, including elderly adults. At Comfort Keepers® of Flemington, NJ, we believe that seniors should be well prepared for any emergency that may come their way. The followings tips can help your elderly loved one plan for all types of emergency situations.

Compile an Emergency Kit

An emergency kit stocked with an assortment of items is a great way for seniors to prepare themselves for emergencies. The kit should include items such as an ample supply of non-perishable food and water, an extra set of house keys, a flashlight, first aid kit, extra clothing, basic kitchen appliances and cooking utensils, cash, a cell phone and charger, a whistle, and hygiene items. The kit should be stored in an easily accessible area so that your senior  loved ones can easily find it on their own if necessary.

Figure out Escape Routes

Seniors should determine how they can escape from every room in their home. Escape routes should be practiced at least twice per year or until your loved ones has the routes retained so they will immediately react and know exactly what to do in the event of an emergency. A safe location away from the home should be arranged in order to meet family/friends and/or first responders.

Create Emergency Contact Information

Your senior loved ones should store a list with their emergency contact information that includes the names and phone numbers of their loved ones. Included on the list should be Information about allergies, communication restrictions, blood type, and medications. Seniors should keep a copy of this list in a wallet or purse, on their refrigerator, in their emergency kit, and any other place that may be accessible during an emergency.

These precautions will help keep your senior loved one safe and alert during an emergency situation or natural disaster.
