What Types of Problems Make Aging in Place More Difficult?

Jan 5, 2018 by Nancy Hmieleski, RN, BSN Director of Nursing

Aging in place is complicated when your elderly family member is facing a multitude of other difficulties. Finding ways around those obstacles can help her to age in place quite easily, however.

Bathing and Other Personal Care Tasks

Bathing, dressing, and grooming can become increasingly difficult for your aging adult to handle on her own. If she gets to the point where she's avoiding these tasks, you or someone else may need to assist her. Your aging family member can still live on her own and obtain this kind of assistance, but she may worry that it's a deal breaker.

Home Maintenance and Safety

Keeping your aging adult safe at home is a high priority task. This means ensuring that the home itself is properly maintained and that there's nothing that can cause her harm, such as excessive tripping hazards or lack of smoke detectors. Go through the home and determine what needs correcting and what needs repair. If the problems are too severe, your senior may have no choice but to move.

Having to Give up Driving

When your senior is unable to drive any longer, this reduces her independence greatly. It can also cut into her ability to be able to age in place gracefully. Look into local agencies that offer transportation to the elderly and see which ones work the best for her. Another option is to talk to other family members about picking up the driving slack. You may feel even better about hiring senior care providers who are dedicated to handling the driving for your elderly family member.

Errands and Other Household Tasks

So many tasks and errands pile up when your aging adult isn't able to keep up with them. One way to handle this for her is to divide up the list and delegate it to other family members, friends, and neighbors who are willing to help. That way the tasks don't all fall to you.

As various other problems crop up for your aging adult, look for ways that you can help her to solve them. You may still come to a point at which she needs to move, but you'll know that you did all that you could.
