How Seniors Can Curb Their Sugar Cravings

Jul 3, 2018 by Suzanne M. White

Most seniors enjoy sugary foods such as cookies and brownies. While sugar filled foods are tasty, they can take a serious toll on an older adult’s well-being. The good news is that there are a variety of ways older adults can curb their sugar cravings and live a healthier life. Comfort Keepers of Flemington, New Jersey, who specializes in adult home care suggest the following tips:

Stick to Whole Foods with Natural Sugar

The next time your senior loved is in the mood for a sweet treat, they should opt for whole foods that contain natural sugar. Fruits and veggies are examples of these foods and are loaded with vitamins and minerals that are important for people of all ages. Comfort Keepers recommends suggest opting for some berries rather than potato chips for an afternoon snack.

Go for a Walk

Believe it or not, studies have proven that going for a walk can help seniors reduce their cravings for a sugary snack. Therefore, older adults should walk around their neighborhood, the local shopping mall, or indoor track whenever they are in the mood for sugar.

Eat Regularly

By waiting too long between meals, older adults set themselves up to reach for foods that are full of sugar and fat. Rather than waiting long hours in between meals, seniors should eat every three to five hours to stabilize their blood sugar and avoid irrational eating behaviors.

Indulge a Bit

Eating something your senior loved has been craving is good at times. Comfort Keepers recommends by allowing your senior loved one to eat a sugar snack every once in a while can help seniors avoid feeling denied.

Combine Foods

If seniors must eat something sugary, they should combine a sugary food with a healthy one. For example, they could take a strawberry and dip it in chocolate or eat some almonds with some chocolate chips.

Sticking to foods with natural sugar, going for a walk, eating regularly, indulging a bit, and combining foods can all help seniors control their sugar intake. If you have any question, contact your healthcare professional immediately.
