Summer brings hot weather with it and lots of sun. While it's great to be able to enjoy longer, warmer days, being too hot has its own dangers. Here are some ways you can help your senior stay cooler this summer.
Fluid Intake Matters a Lot
One of the easiest ways to help your senior stay well in hot weather is to keep her as hydrated as possible. Talk to her doctor about how much water per day is right for her and then gradually work up to that goal. This can be tough if your senior doesn't enjoy the taste of water. Avoiding caffeinated beverages and alcohol can help her to get the fluids that she needs.
What She Wears Matters, Too
Tight clothing that is dark in color can attract heat and keep it trapped against your elderly family member's skin. Looser clothing that is lighter in color can help quite a bit. Natural fabrics, rather than polyester or other synthetic fabrics, also allow the skin to breathe much better. Look for cotton or bamboo fabrics, which tend to be much cooler in hotter weather.
Inside Activities Might Be a Better Idea
If your senior enjoys being outside, the hotter weather may make that tough. Taking some of her favorite activities inside or simply switching to indoor-only activities might be the best answer. Make sure that your senior has working air conditioner, fans, and other tools like blackout curtains that can help her to keep her house cooler.
Look for Ways to Keep Interior Heat Down
Other than using air conditioning during the day and keeping heat out through blackout curtains and blinds, there are other things you can do to keep the inside of your senior's house cooler. Avoiding using the oven is a huge help, of course, so hot weather meals that don't require much cooking at all can help. Look for ways to be creative about keeping the house cooler. Your local health department may have suggestions that apply to your area.
If you don't live with your elderly family member, make sure that you check on her frequently throughout the day to make sure she's doing well. It's also a good idea to hire elderly care providers to be there with her when you can't be. You'll feel more at ease knowing that someone is keeping an eye on how hot your senior might be getting.
